How Often Should I Expect My Chihuahua to Eat?

We recently bought a chihuahua, she seems perfectly healthy and spunky. But, she rarely eats, we bought her special food for small dogs and she barely eats it. I figure it's because she's so small that only a few bites would fill her? Anyone have a chihuahua and can tell me what's normal and whats not?

Many dogs eat only once a day. If she only has a few bites here and there throughout the day, you're making her feel empowered that she can eat whenever she wants. Try a few different kinds of food to see what she likes, then start leaving the bowl with food out only in the morning. Ring a bell when you put the food out. If she doesn't eat, or eats a little, then put it away.

You're in charge, and by choosing when she eats she will learn to be a better dog to you. After a few days, she will realize that ringing the bell means that's the only time she gets to eat today, so she better eat as much as she wants then. This will make both you and your dog happy. Good luck!

She will eat when she is hungry. If a few bites fill her up then she is fine. However if she stops eating entirely then you need to worry. You may want to try different foods, maybe mix a bit of wet food in with the dry… Don't worry, a dog will not starve itself.

I have always left about a 1/4 of a cup of kibble out in a bowl for my chi puppy to eat. She has never gotten low blood sugar despite being a tiny girl. She snacks when she is hungry and never overeats. If I see the bowl getting empty I add more. (Now that she is older I have put that up to a 1/2 cup). Are you feeding your dog what the breeder fed her? You are right that she has a small tummy and she is obviously only eating what she feels she needs. Just leave it available to her. Please get some Nutrical to have on hand just in case she does not eat enough and gets hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) google that so you can read all the symptoms and be aware if it starts happening as it can be life threatening.

Small dogs will eat less than big ones, but they should be eating more than a few bites. I don\t know specific info on chihuahuas but you could try googling them with 'daily food intake' or something like that and you're bound to find helpful information. Also, it's possible she's just a picky eater. Try different kinds of foods (wet, dry, raw, different brands, etc)and see if it makes a difference. Often pet stores will give away free samples of pet foods so you can try them & see if the dog likes them before purchasing.

we dont have a chihuahua but we have a terrier and she eats about once a day, but drinks loads….it isnt unusual for small dogs to eat small amounts, they need less to keep them full, only be concerned if she loses weight

Hi there , with all dogs , you should be the boss.Set regular feeding times and see how much they eat. When they are finished determine how much they ate and the next time you feed your dog give the same amount.Record on a calender or other reference table and do not vary ; either the time or the amount. Do not leave food out for the dog to eat when ever it wants. This way you will know when to walk it.Remember you are the BOSS, give treats for good behavior, verbal repromands for bad.

My chihuahua usually eats twice a day. In the morning around 10 or 11 and then again at night around 7 or 8. She eats very small portions, but she eats regularly at these times. I feel like that's pretty normal.

You should feed it twice a day. However, it will eat whenever you do, and whatever it can find. Chihuahuas especially love chicken and sausage.

i had the same problem with my 5 year old chiuaua. i left her food out all day and it seemed like she never ate. then i started feeding her once a day at a specific feeding time and now she eats like a regular dog. i give her 1 rounded handful of food per day. i also put water in her food because she likes it better that way and she doesnt choke when she's scarffing her food down. hope that helps.
